Silver Toxicity: Fact and Fiction

چکیده

The myths and misconceptions about silver bioavailability and toxicity in aquatic environments do not outnumber the facts but perhaps persist and receive more recognition and credence because the fiction is more interesting. The myths range from those that encompass all "toxic heavy metals" to those that are specific for silver. Some of the myths are embodied in our current regulatory framework while others are apparently slated for use in future decision making. By presenting some of these issues as myths, perhaps we can focus some attention on areas where there are currently critical uncertainties regarding silver, its toxicity and bioavailability in aquatic systems.

Using Iron-Chelating Agents in Critically Ill Patients with Iron Overload. Fact or Fiction?

Recently, some evidence has shown that the failure of iron homeostasis may occur in critically ill patients and can lead to iron overload. Elevated ferritin levels as a body iron burden index in critically ill patients may be associated with depressed level of consciousness and greater mortality. However, the necessity of using iron-chelating agents in clinical situation is still unknown for th...

Toxicity of various silver nanoparticles compared to silver ions in the Ponto-Caspian amphipod Pontogammarus maeoticus (Sowinsky, 1894)

According to the increased probability of the presence of nanomaterials in the aquatic ecosystems, the present study examined the toxicity of three engineered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as silver ions in the Pontogammarus maeoticus, a brackish water benthic organism living in the littoral zone of the Caspian Sea. The animals were acutely exposed to different concentrations of two comm...

Toxicity effect of three kinds of colliodal silver nanoparticles on barnacle larvae Amphibalanus Amphitrite

In this study, the toxicity of colloidal silver nanoparticles produced from three companies (US NANO, Pioneers, Nanonasb Pars) in the larvae of barnacles Amphibalanus amphitrite was evaluated using standard OECD. These crustaceans are important economically and ecologically. In this research, the LC50 within 24 hours for nauplius stages II, III, IV, V and VI examined against toxicity of the thr...

Nanosilver and Silver Nitrate induced toxicity in a subacute murine dermal model

Silver salts and nanosilver (NS) are the common antimicrobial used in the treatment of chronic wounds, so they are important to assess their dermal toxicity. Therefore, in this study, the possible dermal toxicity of NS particles and silver nitrate (AgNO3), was tested by determining the serum level of transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) and study on of mouse skin tissue. In this stu...
